Smart metering infrastructure is an essential part of modern grids, as it helps to make them more reliable and sustainable. However, the large-scale implementation of smart meters faces a challenge due to the high cost and logistics of replacing existing meters.

A retrofit solution is proposed that incorporates the capabilities of smart meters into existing digital meters. An add-on communication module (ACM) is developed that can be integrated with digital meters equipped with optical or serial (RS 232, RS-485) ports.
The ACM communicates the digital meter data using the conventional Modbus protocol or the universal smart metering protocol DLMS/COSEM (IEC 62056-21). The extracted data is transmitted to a data concentration unit (DCU) using LoRaWAN technology. The DCU aggregates data from multiple meters and sends that data to a central storage server.
The proposed module is developed and tested on single-phase and three-phase meters from different meter manufacturers.
The architecture demonstrates how our retrofit solution integrates with existing infrastructure to create a comprehensive smart metering ecosystem.
