The Breaker-Guard device, developed at IIT Kanpur, enhances substation safety by controlling access to circuit breakers. It locks breakers during maintenance, uses OTP-based authentication for authorized crew, and continuously monitors breaker status, reducing risks for field workers and ensuring reliable power supply.
Electrical substations are vital components of the electric power distribution network. Circuit breakers ensure safe power supply by interrupting current during faults or planned load shedding. However, unintended or accidental operation of a breaker can lead to hazards for maintenance workers, unplanned outages, and system instability. Ensuring controlled access and operational safety is therefore critical.
More than 1000 lineman lives lost in the last decade, 70 alone in 2024 due to accidental/unauthorized switching of power in substations. Lineman accidents still occur because someone unknowingly switches the power ON during repair work.
IoT-based access grant system prevents unauthorized operations of circuit breakers during maintenance activities.
